Implementation of the M-bus protocol for a smart metering application

    In this paper, the M-Bus protocol was successfully implemented to obtain data from master-slave devices, programming the controller in the e! Cockpit application. In this application (e! Cockpit) both the block diagram and the coding in the application were used as a method of obtaining data. In the e! Cockpit application, the parameters monitored via the Visualization function can be viewed in real time. The data taken from the controller via the M-Bus protocol was uploaded on the Wago Cloud platform, of the Internet of Things type, so that it can be viewed at any time of the day by the user. After storing the data on the Wago Cloud platform, you can view the fluctuations of the parameters depending on different factors.
    Internet of Things platforms can seamlessly integrate various devices equipped with detection, identification, processing, communication and actuation capabilities. While connectivity and data acquisition are strictly necessary for the Internet of Things, they should not be an end in themselves but a means of technological evolution. An advantage of using Internet of Things platforms is the possibility to set alarms in case of exceeding some values ​​set by the user. Thus, the platform can issue notifications (for example sending an e-mail) to the user for notifying him.
    Smart-metering creates new opportunities in the field of providing and managing public utilities, a field that is on the rise worldwide. Most of the changes will occur through the introduction of modern digital technologies in the field of electricity production, transmission and consumption. The use of master-slave devices for reading electrical parameters can be a future solution for electricity suppliers, as it can always check the energy consumption of users. At the same time, the supplier can more easily predict the electricity consumption needed to be purchased, respectively can eliminate the expenses necessary to use field agents for regular meter reading, thus saving time and money.
    This application can help educate the population because it allows monitoring electricity consumption, by creating opportunities to identify possible peaks in consumption, with implications for reducing the value of electricity bills. Also, through this application you can view in real time the effect of user actions on electricity consumption.
