Between March 24 and 26 the second year Gnó agus Gaeilge students took part in their first online Hackathon in partnership with the island of Aranmore off the coast of Co. Donegal. Three student teams competed against eachother to come up with the best solutions to solve the following issues the islanders deal with:

Getting people to the Island for remote working

    Re-populating the island

Marketing the island as a tourist destination

On the first day, we got an introduction to the Islanders and judges: a members of the Arranmore council, a Language planner and an employee of Three Ireland and they spoke briefly about the problems and the goals of the hackathon. Later on that day, the teams got to meet one-on-one with the mentors to ask specific questions that would help with coming up with solutions.
We also had access to one month of IoT data from Three Ireland that showed analytics for the month of February on the month of Arranmore. Among the data there was footfall data, tourism data and age-group data.
On the second day of the Hackathon we met with the mentors again to iron-out our solutions and to seek further advice with how they would be put into place or developed further. On the third day, we presented our pitch to the judges and they chose the winning pitch.
